Reducing balance charges interest only on the outstanding balance, so it costs less than flat rate, where interest is charged on the original principal for the whole term. Early EMIs are mostly interest; as the balance shrinks, more of each EMI goes to principal. Prepayment goes straight to principal, so every later month’s interest is worked out on a smaller balance; the simulation applies the one-time prepayment at the start of its month, then the EMI plus extra. Figures are estimates at a fixed rate and exclude processing fees, insurance and taxes.

What is EMI Calculator?

EMI Calculator is a free online calculator that calculate EMI, total interest and total payment for any loan. You can change any value to compare scenarios side by side, which makes it easy to plan before you commit to a real decision.

How to Use EMI Calculator

  1. Enter your values in the fields shown on the page.
  2. Tap Calculate, or just change a value, since most calculators update automatically.
  3. Read the result cards and the donut chart.
  4. Adjust the values to compare different scenarios.

How to Read the Result

Start with the headline numbers, then look at the breakup: your own contribution versus the growth or interest on top of it. The chart makes the split obvious, and changing one input at a time shows you exactly which factor moves the result most.

What makes up an EMI?

An EMI Calculator splits every monthly payment into interest and principal. Early payments are mostly interest, because the outstanding balance is large; later payments are mostly principal, because the balance has shrunk. The EMI Calculator donut chart shows total interest versus principal across the whole loan, which is why a longer tenure looks cheaper per month but costs much more overall. With the default example, the EMI Calculator shows a monthly EMI of 8,997 rupees, total interest of 11,59,342 rupees, and a total payment of 21,59,342 rupees.

Use the EMI Calculator before signing, not after. Try a larger down payment or a shorter tenure and watch the total interest fall, then choose the combination whose monthly payment still leaves room for everyday expenses. The mechanics of equated monthly instalments, including the formula behind them, are explained on the Equated monthly instalment page on Wikipedia.

Does prepayment help?

Usually yes, especially early in the tenure, because every extra rupee goes straight against principal and cuts future interest. The EMI Calculator projection assumes no prepayment, so treat any prepayment plan as an improvement on the shown total, subject to the lender prepayment terms.
